Prayer Thoughts
The
Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of
Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled
as to console; to be understood,
as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
(St. Francis of Assisi)
"You yourself can influence more people for God by prayer
than in any other
way. It is not the only thing you must, but the greatest thing you can do."
(Wesly Deuwel)
I urge, then, first of
all, that requests, prayers, intercession and
thanksgiving be made for everyone-for kings and all those in
authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness
and holiness. (I Timothy 2: 1, 2 (NIV))
"Pray for great things, expect great things, work for great things, but above
all, pray."
(R. A. Torrey)
And if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the
petitions that we desired of Him. (I John 5:15)
"Our strength lies in spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to
evil.
Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are
that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance with evil, or by public
tolerance of scandalous behavior."
--Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United
States
"If my people, who are called by my name, will
humble themselves and pray
and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven
and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
II Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
Prayer is a radical conversion of all our mental
processes because in prayer
we move away from ourselves, our worries, preoccupation, and self-gratification,
and direct all that we recognize as ours to God in the simple trust that
through
His love, all will be made new. (Henri Nouwen)
Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious
ways; according
to your love remember me, for you are good, O Lord. Psalm 25:7
Blessed is
the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12)
"The biblical mandate that we pray for
heads of state and all who are in
authority (I Timothy 2:1-4) carries a wonderful promise: that we will be able
to
live quiet, enterprising lives in safety and dignity, and that we will enjoy a
continued
atmosphere of religious freedom for a propagation of the Gospel. The vital
importance of these verses and of The Presidential Prayer Team was certainly
underscored by the September 11 attacks and the massive Homeland Security
efforts that are underway."
(Gary Bergel, President, Intercessors for
America)
Let us never forget, when we pray, that things which are
impossible with men
are possible with God. This is because He is all-powerful. But let
us remember,
too, that some things that are possible with men are impossible with God.
This is because He is all-loving.
Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done.
The Things you planned
for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell them, They would be
too
many to declare. (Psalm 40:5 NIV)
Let's bring back a popular slogan from the 1950s: 'The family
that prays together
stays together.' "I believe that if every Christian couple would pray
together regularly,
our nation would experience a spiritual renewal of historical proportions."
(Dennis Rainley, President, FamilyLife)
"As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we
live."
(Pope John Paul II)
For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there I am in the midst of them.
(Matt. 18:20 PRAISES)
If we would
pray aright, the first thing we should do is to see to it that we really
get an audience with God, that we really get into His very presence. Before a
word
of petition is offered, we should have the definite consciousness that we are
talking
to God, and should believe that He is listening and is going to grant the thing
that
we ask of Him. (Dr. R.A. Torrey)
Hear, O Lord, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer - it
does
not rise from deceitful lips. I call on you, O God, for you will answer me;
give ear
to me and hear my prayer. (Psalm 17:1, 6 (NIV))
Our enemies will purse us deliberately into our very prayer rooms. The
only way
in which we can gather and keep collected our distracted minds and our roaming
thoughts is to center them about Jesus Christ. By that I mean we should
let Christ
lay hold of, attract, captivate, and gather about Himself all our interests.
Then our
sessions of prayer will become real meetings with God. (O. Hallesby)
Whom have I in heaven but Thee? and there if none
upon earth that I desire
beside Thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my
heart, and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:25-26)
Love to pray, feel the need to pray often during the day, and take the trouble
to pray. If you want to pray better, you must pray more. Prayer
enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God's gift of Himself.
(Mother Teresa)
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast
enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
Psalm 4:1
There is always a suitable place to pray, to lift up your eyes to God;
there is no need to get to a place of prayer, pray wherever you are.
Let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually.
(Heb. 13:15)
The secret prayer chamber is a bloody battle ground. Here violent and
decisive battles are fought out. Here the fate of souls for time and
eternity is determined, in quietude and solitude, without another soul
as spectator or listener. (O. Hallesby)
And being in agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat
was as it
were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke 2:44)
Prayer is for the soul what nourishment is for the body.
(Rabbi Judah Halevi)
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed
on thee,
because he trusteth in thee. (Isa. 26:3)
May God open our eyes to see what the holy ministry of intercession is to
which, as His royal priesthood, we have been set apart. May He give us
a large and strong heart to believe what mighty influence our prayers can exert.
(Andrew Murray)
"Build yourselves up in the most holy faith and pray in
the Holy Spirit." (Jude 20 NIV)
Prayer can do anything that God can do. (E. M. Bounds)
"With God all things are possible." (Matt. 19:26)
Continue to pray for this great country
of ours, that our actions be those that are just, honorable, and determined
through prayer and listening to the voice of God. Pray for a legion of angels to
be sent to protect our president and our country from any further attack.
Help us to have a spirit of forgiveness toward those who did this, and leave
vengeance in God's hands. Pray that Christians will heed God's warning and
recommit their lives to Him; for many souls to come to a saving knowledge of
Christ. Remember to pray for all those who were involved in this tragedy, for
the scars, the fears, the sights and sounds that will be alive for a long time.
Comfort for those who are still waiting to hear of loved ones, that word gets to
them that will end the horrific pain of not knowing. Pray God wraps His arms of
love and comfort around the grieving. Life is so uncertain, but the faithfulness
and strength of our God is real, and what a comfort to know the power unleashed
just by calling out the Name Jesus. Father, make me sensitive to the pain in
other people's hearts and help me do whatever I can to ease their pain.
Amen.
Our praying, to be strong, must be buttressed by holy
living. The life of faith perfects the prayer of faith. (E. M.
Bounds)
"Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God." (Romans 12:1)
Prayer is the whole of a man's life. There is no thought,
feeling, yearning, or desire, however low, trifling, or vulgar we may deem it,
which, if it affects our real interest or happiness, we not lay before God and
be sure of sympathy. (Henry Ward Beecher)
"Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous
God. Give me relief from my distress: be merciful to me and hear my
prayer." (Psalm 4:1)
When we pray "in the Name of Jesus", the answers are in
accordance with His nature. If we think our prayers are unanswered, it
is because we are not interpreting the answer along this line.
(Oswald
Chambers)
If ye shall ask anything in my name. I will do
it.
(John 14:14)
Prayer unites the soul to God. (Julian of Norwich)
“O, my Father, if
it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26.39)
God does not give faith in answer to prayer: He reveals himself in
answer to prayer, and faith is exercised spontaneously.
(Oswald
Chambers)
Only it must be
in faith that he asks, with no wavering - no hesitating, no doubting. (James 1:6
AMP)
The best way to remember people is in prayer.
“Praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…for all the saints.”
(Ephesians 6.18)
When we succeed in truly thanking God, we feel good at heart. The reason is
that we have been created to give glory to God, now and
forevermore. And every time we do so, we feel that we are in harmony with his
plans and purpose for our lives. Then we are truly in our
element. That is why it is so blessed.
(O. Hallesby)
“In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known unto God.” (Phil. 4:6)
Prayer should be the means by which I, at all times, receive all that I need, and for
this reason, be my daily refuge, my daily consolation, my daily joy, my source of rich and
inexhaustible joy in life. (O.Hallesby)
"Cast thy
burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee."(Psalm55:22)
"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1Peter 5:7)
